About bernadettemccabe

I have spent 18 years in the South African film industry, climbing my way up the ladder of the art department. While on a commercial in Kenya I discovered a deep passion. Looking through the lens of an old film camera was like being woken for the first time. I extended my ticket & travelled with a Kikuyu crew member to photograph the Masai. This was the beginning of something as important as air - capturing moments in time, reaching into the faces that beckoned, communicating beyond the familiarity of language. I have travelled through Africa & Thailand photographing people in their natural environment, experiencing exhilaration at every “click” of the shutter.

This scholarship would be the answer to my journey. I am dedicated to documenting previously overlooked individuals & communities and aim to be at the forefront of the social & environmental change I wish to see. I would like my work to contribute to photography as an art form. A foot in the door with National Geographic would be (besides the birth of my 16 yr old son) the highlight of my life. That makes me sound old. No, I am a fit, courageous 41 yr old woman, facing the opportunity of a lifetime!
