My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Australia | Friday, October 15, 2010 | 5 photos

The ‘place’ that my series of photos were taken is my homeland Indonesia. My photos reflect on the diversity of faith and tradition in a modern Indonesia. Despite its modern advances, Indonesia is a nation that still prides itself with its cultural and religious facets.
The first photo ‘Buddha’ was taken in Borobudur—a mountainous shrine dedicated to Buddha.
In Bali, ‘Elephant Sajen’ is a portrayal of the Hindu God Ganesh holding a ‘sajen’, which is daily offering that is quintessential to Balinese life. The performance by the actor who played ‘Hanoman’ is an example of how a Hindu tale is performed through a traditional Balinese dance.
‘Mosque’ is an example of the predominant Islamic faith that resonates in Indonesia. The modern industrial look of the tower is an adaptation of a traditional minaret.
‘Padi Man’ is my favourite as really captures the traditional motive of a man who works manually to pick rice and is in peace with his way of life.
In a modern context, these performances and areas are a commodity for the nation as they are often showcased as a tourist attraction.
I should be chosen as I have a desire to explore different cultures and to learn to capture it in photographs for the others to experience. I believe that an effective photograph is one that makes people feel that they part of the image. I hope I have done this with my photos. As a dedicated and creative person I would love to learn how to improve my photography skills, as this would be a generous gift for others and myself in the future.
