My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Belarus is a country in transition in the heart of Europe that still is -to a certain extent- adopting socialistic means of production and wealth distribution in accordance with the former USSR model, the so-called "last dictatorship in Europe". My visit was a profound opportunity to explore this relic of the Iron Curtain in an effort to comprehend in what terms this country is different from our western standards, how this system is affecting the people and what the impact of socialistic planning is on the urban and rural scenery. Transitional Belarus, the awkward relic of an eastern era long in decay, struggles to be renounced as a western misfit and find its position within contemporary European community. The scale is definitely inhumane and individuality is suppressed to the lowest level.
I would describe my photographic approach as "meditative documentary", more prone to a deep understanding of the present conjuncture. This ignites a more embracing and holistic approach rather than a square and controlling one. The camera becomes an invaluable companion because it enables the observer to transcribe his perception with the least possible intervention, acknowledging and affirming through an instant shutter release and therefore documenting in a unique, non-imitative way.
I am looking for possibilities to travel at places where reality, coexisting to our contemporary western, drives me to a journey of time, space and ways of being which seem to exist in a parallel cosmos, similar to ours but yet entirely different. Expanding my photo skills and commitment to photography is my main challenge and pursuit. Being on a very low budget in times of crisis, this would be a great opportunity for my to evolve and discover.
