I am a Nigerdelta woman

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Nigeria | Monday, November 7, 2011 | 5 photos

I graduated from the University of Lagos in 2009 and had to go for the compulsory National Youth Service corps where i was posted to Rivers state, Nigeria. Prior to these service, i had never had the priviledge to get towards the south south region of Nigeria but the service led me in these direction. My 12months stay in these part of my country also known as the Niger Delta Region gave me the opportunity to use my camera which i purchased out of an enthusiasm for imagery. I observed that women where engaged in so much hardwork compared to the men, they fetched firewoods, they had to go to the farm, had to do so many hard tasks while the men enjoyed themselves with several bottles of alcohol. These images are a little peep into the struggle for survival of Nigerdelta women.
I believe i should be chosen for these scholarship because to me, i see photography as a tool of communication and also as a channel of change, i have so much passion for documentary photography and would like to learn so i can be better and would be more enabled to use my passion to affect my society positively.
