A country on top of a hill - San Marino

How did I end up here? San Marino - a tiny little country on its own on top of a hill in the middle of Italy. A real country? Yes. It's small, but beautiful! A big fortress pretty much and a massive wall all around what isn't much bigger than a little village. The whole country of San Marino goes further than the walls of the castle and claims to have a population of a bit over 31,000. But the heart of the San Marino - the fortress and the castle - is where you wanna be. It is just amazing and you feel like you have gone back in time about 800 years. You can feel the medieval era, you can see it in your head, imagine what it was like back then. If you close your eyes, you see the knights in their heavy armour, the vivid markets, people in long robes and medieval hair dresses, cats and chicken running around. You can smell the open fire of the blacksmith and hear him hammer away. You feel the wind of horses trotting past and you get a waft of what they left behind. Beautiful melodies of flutes, lutes, harps and singing flow through the air from a group of street musicians sitting on the rough pavement... How did I end up here? I just followed the road, saw a street sign and turned off. A long windy road up the hill led me to this magical place with stunning views from the top. I dined in a restaurant right on the edge of a big drop off. Wow! Having dinner and tingly toes looking at the view - what an experience! I could have stayed there for days as it was like leaving reality and entering a fairytale of kings and castles. I will never forget this beautiful place. :)
