Jinja's expansion

Sugar cane fields close to the Jinja area. They have reached the Mabira forest, one of the few remaining primary and secondary forest in Uganda. In 2007 the local sugar cane factory had a plan to clear one-third of the forest in order to increase plantations. But thanks to the mobilization of the Ugandan this plan was suspended.

On the horizon: Jinja. This city, as many African cities is going through a rapid expansion due to rural urban migration and natural population growth. Being the second largest town in Uganda it now covers an area of approximately 28 square kilometers.
Whether it is for urban space or for industrialized agricultural space, surrounding zones and forests are now at stake in this race for land.

Illegal Waragi brewery. Some villages specialize in the home-made fabrication of this local gin, made out of either bananas or sugar cane molasses purchased at the nearby sugar cane factories. This fabrication process is known to be dangerous and many people have died drinking it on the long term because of the high amount of methanol.
