Trip to a rocket launch

My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

My name is Emil Cancar. I'm a 3rd year journalism student from Croatia. I am a teaching assistant on courses Visual Culture and Photojournalism at Faculty of political science in Zagreb. In 2011, I won the international journalistic contest 'Space and Future of Humanity'. I intend to be a photojournalist one day. I don't think I can yet call myself a photographer. I've been shooting for three years now and I still feel like I'm just getting started. I have no intention to pursue jobs in fashion or similar branches. I have this naive belief that I could contribute to humanity by conveying real stories through pictures. Often I feel mesmerised when I look at photographs by Tim Hetherington, Lynsey Addario and many more like them. What I expect from this scolarship, should I win it, is that some additional technique will be added to my skills. An oportunity to stretch my boundries of photographic work. I agree with James Nachtwey's view that journalism is a service industry and the service we provide is awareness. I don't have a choice, I have to follow that belief. And this scholarship could help me set the foundations for my future work.
