My Scholarship entry - My Kind of Adventure

The Talibe subject- as a controversial topic- was something I'd heard about before coming to Senegal as an American Peace Corps volunteer. The locals know the negative aspects of the Talibe lifestyle as much as the international community. So, even with limited resources, I knew I wanted to make a film that focused more so on the “Why-continue-to-pursue-this-life?” theme rather than the blatant negativities of living as a Talibe.
I have a university degree in film; have worked as a PA on feature length films, and studied film and broadcasting in Paris. I love the production process; filming, editing, late nights, stressed deadlines, all of it. It’s exciting and it’s my passion. Getting your foot in the door is difficult for any career, and film is no different. My goal is to work in any capacity along the production process, particularly in interacting with the community/actors and especially in editing. I know the skills I lack, so what’s important for me is not a ‘pick-me-up’, but mentorship and training. This scholarship emphasizes and shares these same sentiments. So winning would mean an opportunity to learn and exchange; two key components that are also important in travel.
