My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Uganda | Thursday, October 6, 2011 | 5 photos

I am a 30 year old photography lover.Writing that gave me a bit of chill.30 already, not a photographer... yet, working in a bar and taking time off to make photos and dream of working as a photographer.I hope this scholarship will help me fullfill that dream.I wanted to chose 5 images from India because I love this country and the photos of Steve McCurry and Cartier Bresson were the inspiration for me to trying to become a photographer but in the end I finally chose a sequence of 5 photos from Uganda because it probably was some of the hardest photos for me to take. I took these photos in the first days of our arrival in Uganda, to be more specific this was in Mbarara, in one of the hospitals where our medic first operated. The first contact with the suffering of these people made me incapable of taking photos. I was like paralyzed. The first thing that got me out of that state was the look in the eyes of a kid that was carried in her arms by his mother into a room filled with patients waiting for the doctor. The child had AIDS and it seemed that everyone in the waiting room knew that. He was a child but everyone looked at him like he was a danger for them.I wanted to do something to help. This time giving chocolate and pen would just not be enough. Then, I remembered why my friends trusted me and why they took me with them... make photos that show the story back home.I´ll always remember this kid because I feel he never had the opportunity most of us have, to do something we love and be remembered by it. And still.. he changed me.
