Koh Chang, Trat. Days 3, 4 & 5

Hello :)

So after leaving Bangkok at 9am, our 7 hour bus ride, 1 hour boat ride and 30 minute taxi ride finally got us to Lonely Beach at Koh Chang (elephant island). After a quick scout around for a hostel we ended up staying at a place called KL KL Hostel. It was a fairly basic room with a private swimming pool but at 200 baht a night, we couldn't complain. Well, except that there was no toilet roll, only the bum gun...... nice.

We ended up eating at a place called the Magic Garden, the food was sooo good we decided to eat there every night. Chicken chashew nut being the highlight and best meal of the trip so far. The next morning we needed the day to rest, so a day out on the scenic and sandy shores of lonely beach was just what the doctor ordered. Definitely the most scenic and stunning place I have seen yet, paradise seemed almost possible! But before too long, we saw it fit to book a jungle and elephant trek the following morning. So with yet another early start, we promised we wouldnt drink much at the beach party later that night. However, I guess promises are made to be broken, I think you can see where I'm going with this :p

So later that night with a few cocktail buckets and flame throwing lunatics, we didn't stand a chance of a quiet night. After chatting to a few of the local travellers, Zoë met a Swedish guy. That's nice, or so we thought.... It turns out he jumped on a bag snatchers motorbike in Cambodia and accidently killed the theif! Feeling somewhat safe after that, we made it back at 3am and were up again at 7am for the jungle and elephant trek.

We got picked up in a truck at 8am and started making our way to the north of the island. Lucy ended up throwing up during the journey there haha. Feeling a bit tender, the last thing we needed was a 5 hour trek through the jungle, scaling almost 750 meters. It was so hot inside the jungle all the alcohol was sweated put in minutes. Despite the hard work it was well worth it once we reached the top - the view was incredible. And reaching the cold water fall on the way down was a relief too! The day was nicely rounded off with an elephant trek and a chance to feed the elephants - definitely a worthwhile experience :)

It was another dinner at Magic Garden and an early night (I promise), as the next day we planned to get out of Koh Chang and head north to Chiang Mai.

Some travel advice:

Try haggling for the price of the room as they gave it to us cheaper on the last night.

Take some extra food and some spare clothes when you go jungle trekking - you get hungry and very sweaty.

Have a look at the local attractions, there are normally great day trips to do.

Look around at different tourism offices for best prices for travel to your next destination. We were quoted 3100 baht for a bus and flight to Chiang Mai. We managed to get a bus to Bangkok for 450 baht and a flight to Chiang Mai (whilst at the airport) for 1800 baht, saving us 850 baht which is worth a lot in Thailand!!!

Hi! I found your blog doing some research for my trip in two weeks. So , do you wished you had stayed longer in Koh Chang? Did you go to any other beaches in Thailand which you can compare it to? And your general impressions of the place. Right now I will be there for one additional day so 2.5 days. Do you think I need to consider staying there longer and cut one day from my Chiang Mai stay which right now is set for 6 days?

Thanks!

Koh Chang is great, make sure you stay at Lonely beach its much better than white beach (i think its called). There's lots to do in Chiang Mai so really its up to how long you stay there, we stayed there about a week and we were busy pretty much everyday. 2.5 days is probably enough to have a day chilling out on the beach in koh chang and maybe doing an activity the day after. I personally really liked koh chang it was one of the best islands we visited, the islands down south tend to be more touristy, sometimes dirtier, or lacking atmosphere. Hope this helps.

So I assume you went back to make it a total of a week... the first 3 mentioned here plus a return. Thank you for your insight. I wish the journey to get there didn't take so long. Your blog and your response really helps. I am considering maybe staying an extra day, but I need to change my fight for a fee and spend one less day in Chiang Mai. I also feel like doing just as you guys did. First after the long journey, beach day, then the 2nd day doing an Elephant/Jungle tour, and the last day a beach day. I am headed down to Krabi for 4 days after Chiang Mai which yes, I am afraid may be too touristy or dirty, but considering this is my first time here and the beautiful pictures I have seen, I want to check it out too. Hopefully I won't have any regrets. I will just have to come back to Thailand again, considering I only have 19 days total. :)

I just read your entire trip journal, which I am glad I came across. Very helpful! I am getting excited for my trip as the plans are coming together. And I see your trip wasn't that long ago, and it sounds like it was a good one. It definitely gave me ideas although the only difference being now really wanting the extra day in Koh Chang and shifting the rest of my trip by a day even if it means coughing up the change fees. I will decide. Do you think 1.5 days in Krabi (no rock climbing for me) and 1.5 day in Koh Phi Phi is good... the tour for the day and half a day at the beach, one party night? Again thank you!

Glad you've found the blog useful, I still need to put up posts for Phuket and Koh Lak, so if you were thinking of visiting those places then keep an eye out. I also changed my flight date, cost me £75 with fly emirates. I'd say it's worth changing your flight date if you intend to stay at least a week more/or less. Well I stayed in Ao Nang and saw some of Railay beach. I'd recommend those places over Koh Phi Phi. But if you're just planning a day trip and night out then I guess 1.5 days would be enough. Just be aware that you often have to book these trips the day before at the tourism shops as the trips tend to leave early in the morning. So if you arrive in locations during the day, you probably won't be able to get on a trip until the day after.
