About austinfishmonger
I have been driven to the intersection of food and culture my whole life. I keep a hungry palate and indulge any opportunity that finds me. I have cooked and catered for a handful of renowned restaurants, graduated from culinary school and then started working as a cheesemonger in 2008 where I created a fish buying club within a small mountain-locked community. Around the same time, I also climbed aboard as production and design intern at the high-end cheese magazine 'Culture'. Not only was I surrounded by like-minded and hungry people (customers and colleagues), but I was also learning how to share the passion and ideas through new media.
I was also awarded a James Beard Work-Study Grant and fabricated my own work-study program to feed my passion for fish, oysters and journalism. From studying with a renowned photojournalist to spending time on oyster farms and fishing boats, I was living my dream and still am.
I currently manage a seafood program at a food co-op where I teach the importance of buying fresh and sustainable as well as taking the fear away from customers about eating and cooking seafood. I also am a partner in an oyster company that caters raw oyster bars for weddings and other events.
I have no doubt when I say that an opportunity to explore, journal/blog, and eat my way through Sri Lanka is something I have worked so hard to be able to do.
My journey as a fishmonger and photojournalist continues and if you will let me, I will share it with you all!
