First sighting of the Northern Lights

Chasing the lights

ICELAND | Wednesday, 14 May 2014 | Views [179] | Scholarship Entry

This January I acted on my wishes of the last 23 years and booked a trip with my Astrophysicist boyfriend to Reykjavik. (Who would know more about this stuff than him, right?).
With a car hired and ready, and a vast array of aurora forecast websites in tow we were ready to see the lights. Over the course of the week websites for cloud cover were refreshed over and over throughout the day. Space weather websites became addictive and although I wasn't sure of all of the physics behind a 'Solar flare' or a 'Coronal Mass Ejection' on the sun, I knew they were a good thing; and that's all that mattered. Our trip was planned for January as this winter was the prime time in the 11 year sun cycle (once again, who knows?) and I was not willing to miss out on that.
Each night we drove several hours out of the city, in an attempt to find clear skies. Clouds seemed to cover the sky wherever we were. We planned our route by any gap that could be seen in the blank grey canvas above. Any hint of a star was good enough for us.
Thingvellir National Park was our first port of call. Nothing.
The next day we tried Grindavik. Still no luck.
As the days passed and the cloud cover remained I began to worry. All of this money spent on a trip of a lifetime, and no Northern Lights? I fell in love with Reykjavik as soon as I arrived, but I still couldn't shake the idea that I could be leaving Iceland in a couple of days without seeing the one thing I've dreamed about for years. The night before flying home we set out for one last trip, nervous as anything that we'd be as unsuccessful as the previous nights. We drove further than we'd driven before, parked up on a gravel track and prayed we didn't break down in the middle of nowhere. This time we'd come prepared and had a film to watch on the laptop, an hour in to Con Air starring Nicholas Cage, I looked up to see a haze of green light appearing over the clouds in the distance. I thought I was seeing things. I screamed and climbed out of the car. Waiting patiently for this slow moving light to come closer towards me - I needed confirmation that this was happening. Gradually the green haze became clearer and yellow colours were laced throughout the ribbons above my head. Moving far faster than I ever thought they would, pretty soon the lights were directly above us and it was as though I was encased by a cage of light. It was the most beautiful experience of my life. I think...my view was slightly impaired by my tears.
