Ode to Detroit

My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

USA | Saturday, November 24, 2012 | 5 photos

I've found that some of the most fascinating places are the ones that are overlooked. I've been to Syria and Easter Island, to name a few, but my heart belongs to Detroit. We've all seen pictures of the beautiful ruin that have dominated the headlines, but this is only part of the story. I uprooted from Seattle two months ago to move to Detroit with the goal of photographing the incredible culture, the beautiful people and the amazing stories that are swept under the rug due to the city's challenging circumstances. I've made a commitment to shoot positive photos for one year (photo a day) because I care deeply about the city and its people, and I am passionate about changing cultural perceptions. I'm also interested in furthering my photography career. My profession is a freelance copywriter, but I shoot on a daily basis for fun for my project and my pictures have been recognized by National Geographic and National Geographic Traveler eight times as Editor's Picks/Photo of the Day/Daily Dozen in the last year alone. I would be so honored to shoot next to a pro in Oman, and bring those skills back to Detroit where I can continue my photographic mission of showing more people the beauty of the city I love.
