The Dying Sea & the Desert of Salt

My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Uzbekistan | Thursday, January 10, 2013 | 5 photos

A previous winner of the World Surface travel photography competition, I am an avid traveler and have so far visited forty-one countries. Travel is my life, and visiting, understanding and documenting other cultures is the most important thing to me. A student of history, I am currently applying for an MSc in Violence, Conflict and Development with a special emphasis on Central Asia at SOAS. My most recent trip was to Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and the photographs uploaded are from Moynaq, Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan. Once a sea port, Moynaq now lies 200 kilometres from the Aral Sea, which is rapidly disappearing due to Soviet-era irrigation policies which continue to this day, constituting the world's worst man-made ecological disaster. A previously published author, I am currently working on a photo/travelogue from this trip. I hope to return to Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan in August to complete this. My key areas of interest are South-East Asia, Central Asia and Arabia. I assure you that you could not possibly choose anyone with more enthusiasm and willingness to learn. I am hard working and supremely eager to take hold of this wonderful opportunity.
