My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited
United Kingdom | Friday, July 5, 2013 | 5 photos
Despite growing up around photography, for years it was never something I became overexcited about. In fact, I was quite indifferent toward it. I'd appreciate a good photo, but It was only during university, after coming across an article on the use of photos to convey political discourse, my interest was firmly grabbed. The understanding that photos can change the world didn't lead me to some self righteous quest to take the greatest photograph. Instead it sparked a deep respect for the individual behind the lens. Everything has a story, So long as the photo is right, we can begin to understand these. All my life I had wanted to travel. But adventures were limited to the words of Jules Verne, amongst the likes of Palin and Bryson, and countless travel magazines.
Then came Central America. My first real experience of the world. Wildlife, landscapes, people, stories, it had everything. And I had my camera. It wasn't just the photos. Researching (and in most instances, creating) the stories that would inspire the images gave me the most satisfying feeling, . Through the lens, I can give a piece of any place, any circumstance, to people who may never see it.
