I would like to share with my recent adventure trip to the event called Kopkari, which is nomadic version of polo game for Central Asian regions. It is also known as Ulak-Tartish, buzkashi, kok-boru in different regions of Asia. The differences are that horsemen are not specially trained for the game, but have been doing it as our generation played hide and seek every evening outside and instead of plastic ball, they use goat or ship carcass. By carcass I mean sheep body without head and legs. Because an average sheep or goat weights around 25 kilos and its skin is too mild for this game, people put it in salty water a day before the game and fill it up with a bag (usually 50 kilos) of salt. At the end they get 70-80 kilo “ball”, usually several of those are used in one game as one is torn out half way through. The game rule is to pick up the ball from the ground and to carry it to the marked place. It sounds quite doable, if not to consider that there are usually other 400 players with the same aim. It looks harsh, as players are equipped with stick to command with a horse, but the game rules do not prohibit hitting each other either. That is why players wearing remind protective mattress cover. What I liked most about the event is that you should dig hard to find a sport that would tell about people, traditions and lifestyle in one go more than this. I even saw horse nail clipping there. Moreover, little patriot in me feels proud that, it feels like a solid background for sustainable tourism development.
Kopkari takes place in different places and schedule is known on a short notice. I am so lucky to work at travel agency and thanks to my job I get info from the organizer. Because there is only one man organizing it of the age 60+ who doesn’t use more advanced office equipment than fax, I get updates by phone only. We stared a special page on FB and share news about upcoming events on our website and fb pages.
The game is seasonal, from autumn till mid/end of spring until it gets hot. Locations and days are not known I advance, but should someone plan their trip to Uzbekistan, news can be obtained from our webpage, and for a navigation, just contact me.
The next time I publish update on new games, I would like to organize transport as well, as I saw a lot of interest from the city locals. And little addition to my backpack, I will take binoculars.
