Hate at First Sigh or was it Bitter Love?

NEW ZEALAND | Thursday, 8 May 2014 | Views [182] | Scholarship Entry

I was born and brought up in Fiji. Went to primary and high school there, lived my 18 years of life in a a primitive enclosed environment thus you can imagine my shock when I ended up in New Zealand with my family. With no friends, no food (well there was food, but I was too homesick), no idea's how to run back to Fiji (or rather catch a flight), I had to swallow the bitter truth. New Zealand is my new home. I'll be brutally honest. I hated New Zealand and everything relating to it for the first few weeks. I joined uni, lots of foreign unknown white faces, with me being the only brown face around. One day I told myself, enough, stop moping and face the facts. You have to accept NZ, no matter what. I gradually began to accept NZ, its traditions, its culture, its lifestyle. Now I can sinfully say, I bitterly love NZ. The 1st time I visited Napier (my aunt) - 7 hours bus drive from Auckland, I fell in love with Napier. Never in my life had I en-counted such raw beauty. The landscapes on the voyage, the untouched natural beauty of NZ lies outside Auckland. Now to think of it, the 1st day I actually arrived in NZ, maybe I had always loved the country, but deep in my heart, I didnt want to accept it.
