End of a Day's Work 2011

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Australia | Monday, October 31, 2011 | 5 photos

In the past 21 years of my life I have lived in a continuous shift between family and place - the urban and the rural, the industrious and the natural, the noisy and the silent. I grew up in small rural town Kandos situated in mid-Western New South Wales, Australia. Not so popular in the name of tourism it co-insides with a struggling employment rate relying heavily on industry to provide for the families situated around the area. The photographs capture the day of complete closure of the cement works which founded and supported the town since 1916. They portray the plant as it was left on the day of complete closure in July 2011. Tools and equipment are abandoned, while cement settles covering the once noisy workplace into an eerily quiet apocalyptic world.

Currently working towards completing my degree in the Creative Arts at the University of Wollongong, I wish to continue with my passion of photography and incorporate my lust for travel. A driving point for capturing brief moments in time is the desire to learn and immerse myself into the landscape and culture, capturing a glimpse of a part of the world which is hidden and not spoken to mostly the remaining general population. It is a characteristic of myself to go an adventure into the unknown and unfamiliar places. The opportunity to learn and develop my photography skills and knowledge as well as experiencing what it is like to work on assignment for National Geographic would be the ultimate experience for me, a dream come true. Photographing in South Africa encapsulates this experience for me.
