Do you know what people usually do at midnight? Sleep? Or a pub time? Well, there’s more of it, and it happen in this small town called Solo. This small big town located in Central Java, Indonesia, will be literally alive at night. Not alive like Las Vegas alive, but it’ll make you alive and greed enough to eat. I’m telling you the truth. In Solo, I can see a lot food stalls all over the town which starts to open at midnight. Feeling late for dinner? Not in this town. Not only food, but I can find any kind of warm beverages in the middle of the chilly night. The most popular warm beverage here is something called “wedang ronde”. It’s a chewy round shape ketan flour served with a hot ginger sauce. Sounds simple? This chewy flourball has its own surprise. When I bit the flourball, there’s a caramelized peanut crumble inside, and it really savory. Moreover with the ginger sauce. So when I ate and drink this “wedang ronde”, it feels like a piece of paradise. Sweet, a bit salty, and the ginger sauce gave me some warm feelings in my throat and lungs. What a great beverage. Not feeling enough with that? Well, you should eat something from the stall. This stall also provide some special snacks that you can only meet in Solo. There’s “nasi kucing”, if I say it in English it would be “cat rice”. Cat rice or “nasi kucing” is a special snacks consist of rice and a small amount of spicy fish and it wrapped with a banana leaves. Sounds weird, isn’t it? But, it’s not about the look or the amount of the food, but it’s about the culture. Those foods and beverages are sold in a stall called “hik”. They only open at midnight and close at dawn. I really enjoy the atmosphere in the stall, the people are really kind. While we have a chit-chat, a bowl of “wedang ronde” and some “nasi kucing” accompany us in those beautiful night. This is what most people of Solo usually do at midnight. They’re not sleep yet, they eat and make friends in this “hik”. A brand new way to make friends in life.
