A Place to Wander

My passion for photography was first ignited when I was first given responsibility for my father’s SLR aged 9 on a climbing trip to Arapiles, Australia; photography has since become an intrinsic part of how I view the world around me.
I have been immersed in the landscape in a variety of ways, be it mountaineering, sailing, or adventure racing to name a few. Each adventure is something that drives me as a photographer, continually inspired by my surroundings, and attempting to capture their unique energy.
I am currently studying towards a Bachelor of Design (hons) majoring in Photography at Massey University, Wellington, NZ. In the future I would like to work in the field of photojournalism. The world is a very interesting place and the experience of discovering and documenting and sharing is incredible. In this image driven society photographs have so much power and the potential to inform people, evoke emotion and sway opinion. I hope to someday make a difference with my photography, as it is a great form of advocacy, I plan to spend my life utilizing this skill and art to educate people about the world and to enact positive change.
Why should I be the one to win the scholarship? I generally hate to put myself before others, but given this opportunity I believe it would be a great stepping-stone and the most valuable learning experience to help me on my way in my mission as a creative activist. I place great value on learning and developing as a photographer and being mentored by Jason Edwards would be such a great opportunity for this. The chance to continue developing my skill set under the guidance of an established photographer in the industry I intend to work in would be invaluable for the launch of my career.
