My Father, a native of the Olympic Peninsula, hikes up the Elwah every couple of months to see how the river has changed.

In September 2011 the Elwah River began reclaiming its natural valley after the removal of two hydroelectric dams. The conditions in this image, what used to be Lake Mills, haven’t been seen in over a century.

Millions of cubic yards of sediment continue to pour into the river. The transformation of the valley is one scientists and ecologist will monitor for decades to come.
