Crab season in Costa Rica

COSTA RICA | Friday, 5 June 2009 | Views [1609]

It´s the rainy season in Costa Rica, and that means it´s also crab season! They are everywhere, and I do mean everywhere. One night, one of the girls came in late and forgot to push the old towel up against the door (to keep out pests dince there is a crack under the door and then a path leading to the beach.) I heard a funny clicking/tapping noise, and was looking for my flashlight, when I heard Marta, one of the girls from Norway, moving in her bed, which is nearest the door. She started muttering something in Norwegian, and then, she suddenly let out an ear-piercing scream. That woke up all of us in the dorm, and we turned on our flashlights. There were at least six crabs in our room, one of which had climbed up the bed rail and into Marta´s hair! One of the other girls started screeching that her pants were moving. She had left a pair of pants on the floor, and she and another girl grabbed the legs and picked them up to find two crabs scuttling around underneath. They are referred to in Costa Rica as land crabs, meaning that they spend quite a lot of time outside the ocean, and are excellent climbers. They are also quite large, and you see them everywhere. We had to get a broom and shove them out of our cabin. Needless to say, no one has EVER forgotten to use the towel as a doorstop again! Also, there is an opossum living in the litchen. Apparently he is harmless, but has a face that looks like pure evil. It is a scary sight. I was hoping to see wildlife in Costa Rica, so I guess I can´t complain, although I was thinking more along the lines of toucans and two-toed sloths. More stories soon!
