My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Thursday, October 14, 2010 | 4 photos

My name is Annie DeYoung. I am from Grand Rapids, Michigan. My biggest aspiration is to be a photographer and travel around the world. What could be better? Which brings me right to National Geographic. I have always been drawn to its photography and dreamt of doing the same; capturing different ways of life for the benefit and inspiration of its readers. When I found this opportunity I knew I could not pass it up.

These photographs illustrate time spent in the summer with my sister, who lives in New York City. Each photograph shows a different time and a different feeling, all windows into the vibrant emotions of the city.

The first image is about impatience. The strong gaze from the women in red intensifies the image and brings the emotions higher. This vibrant photograph shows my love for color.

The second photograph is from the top of the empire state building. This image expresses the power of the city and how the viewer would feel being on top of the world in New York City.

The third photograph in the subway has a reflection of two men. I love this aspect of the image because it shows the calm behavior of the men in between the contrast of the busy city.

The last photograph highlights the entertainment and life of the city. This is my favorite shot because of the first child and how her face tells us so much of what she is thinking.

I would like to say that this would be a great opportunity for me because eventually this is where I would love to end up in my photography career. Recently traveling to Italy and Ireland has enforced my drive to venture into new cultures and experience something more then the world I am familiar with.
