My Scholarship entry - Eat, pray, love in Morocco, North Africa

I have a passion for telling other peoples’ stories. As a journalist, that’s probably a good characteristic of mine, considering that is my main responsibility. The closest way I have found to put my audience into my subjects’ shoes is to share their stories through photography. Growing up in Morocco, I developed an eye for photography. It wasn’t hard, as I lived in a vibrant and colorful city filled rich history and stories waiting to be told. In Morocco, I struggled with the ethics of photography. My urge to take pictures that gave a window into their culture was challenged. Sometimes, I had to ask permission, which would generally eliminate any chance of getting a good candid shot. Being determined, I did not let that stop me. The compromise I ended up learning was that in order to share my life in Morocco and my neighbors’ stories with others I might have to work a few angles, and be a little more inventive and resourceful. I think that my ability to catch moments that tell stories amidst chaos, unpredictable circumstances, and camera-shy subjects will be key. I will bring my passion and enthusiasm to this trip in the Amazon and soak up every lesson from Jason.
