It's a Mandevilla vine that's been shaped like a tree. Notice multiple trunks are supported by a beam.
In your face!!!

...who works and just got this botanical challenge. I thought it was a bit too quiet on the Beth front. Glad to have your able spirit in the mix. I'll be back! Soon!

I am so sorry that Brash Beth is...well...there is no other way to put it....WRONG. It has been positively ID'd as the stunningly gorgeous Bougainvillea spectabilis. Send prize to home address. Scotch, perhaps?

I believe it is actually just a plain old Crepe Myrtle. They're trying to trick us...this photos was actually taken in Atlanta shortly before their departure...

Mel, Provacative and enterprising solution but as I told big sister...simply wrong. I have 9 plant specialists from India to the UK, from California to Hawaii confirming the Bougainvillea spectabilis. They especially reference the woven trunk habit, the balmy ocean clime of Lisbon and the superfluity of blossoms. Mel, perhaps you can help Beth with my fifth of single malt? Cheerio

Five single malt balls? No problem! Hopefully they won't melt in the mail.

I am so sorry, U.Steve, that you had to have your friends help you. I'm glad I was able to point them in the right direction by identifying the "tree" as a vine. But since I respect my elders I will give you this one....

Happy birthday Vinnie! I will be monitoring this trip much better than last time... hope everything goes well... you caught the euro at a good time - joe

(Thanks, all, for the birthday wishes!)

Steve, you finally got one right. It's indeed a bougainvillea. More of these coming, we've already taken two more pix of mystery plants.

1) It was a Pyrrhic victory. Your two fils extracted a biting vengeance and I must concede. The 5 malted balls was priceless.
2) Happy Birthday! (whoops)
3) If you have been floating, what plants may we expect? Giant sea-weed?

Bon continuing voyage.....

How about an animal or food quiz instead of plants... I'm much better at those topics.

Most excellent idea...and efficient. Cooking animals! Let's conjecture...The Baltic Sea: whitefish and beets, or cod liver oil vinaigrette on kale with shreds of anchovy, or potatoes with side pork and cat tails, or sardines in sour cream over rye with a hint of reindeer musk? Bring it!
