My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Tuesday, November 8, 2011 | 3 photos

We live on an incredible planet filled with more beauty than anyone could hope to see in a thousand lifetimes. I yearn to experience as much of this world as possible and my heart aches for those that are unable to. The core of my passion for photography lies in trying to share the beauty of the Earth with those that may otherwise not see it.

I am usually most content while hiking one of the many trails in my hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. I am blessed to live in such a diverse state. Spending time outdoors hiking and camping throughout Arizona played a considerable role in sparking my interest in photography.

I am an experienced traveler and I never go anywhere without my camera. Capturing the essence of a new location through photography helps me understand my destination better. I want to appreciate the place as the locals do then photograph it in a way they have never seen before. I want to practice and learn more about balancing the natural beauty of a place with its inhabitants. How can I best represent their culture and their physical environment in a way that will captivate my audience?

This photo scholarship will be a magnificent opportunity to draw on the knowledge of an experienced travel photographer. Especially to be on location assisting, observing, discussing and then practicing in the tremendous setting of South Africa. I want to start a career in travel photography, this scholarship would provide an incredible foundation for pursuing my goal.

I know I have succeeded in representing the essence of a place when someone views my photographs, asks me about the people, what it’s like to be there, and then decides that they must experience it first hand.
