Catching a Moment - The Day I Got Lost
PHILIPPINES | Friday, 19 April 2013 | Views [327] | Scholarship Entry
I can no longer remember its date and everything else I did on that day besides that brief moment of adventure. We're already finished on the last tour of our school field trip in Nayong Pilipino, one of Southeast Asia’s most beautifully landscaped parks showcasing Philippine’s culture, history and geography. Busses were parked waiting for those who are still shopping or freshening up in the restroom. I and my mom who’s my chaperon already went back to our bus even there's still time to spare. There was a girl seated across mine, her name is Shane a second grader cousin of my classmate Dexter, we know each other but we are not friends or close enough to have a long chat. Her chaperon and cousin were not around. She was staring at the souvenirs that I bought particularly the pouch made of shells that are use in playing sungka, a popular traditional Filipino board game where the board is a carved length of wood called a sungkahan and played by moving the shells around the pits carved into the board. She enthusiastically asked, “Where did you get that?” pointing on the pouch. I told her I bought it on the shop that looks like an Ifugao house in the Banaue Rice Terraces. She then asked me “can you take me there?” I looked at my mom who was having a deep snooze, she taught me well how to avoid getting lost on trips but somewhat I forgot or ignored it all and left the bus. We talked a lot now, she told me she and her cousin have only one available chaperon, their aunt. Since parents or legal guardians are required to chaperon their kids on our school field trips, her parents insisted that she ride with us third graders. I couldn't remember other conversations we had but I could perfectly remember that we couldn't find the way to the Banaue Rice Terraces but oddly I wasn't afraid nor considered ourselves lost, instead I was thrilled. We embarked on an adventure discovering the Philippines within the park without knowing our way around. We went on the peak of Mayon Volcano, climbed the top of Mount Apo, played slide on the Chocolate Hills, and hiked down the Banaue Rice Terraces, where the store where I bought the pouch is located. Shane bought one for her then we went on to find our way back to the bus. We stumbled upon our Filipino teacher with a familiar look on her face signifying we are in big trouble. She told us our chaperons are freaking out! But I learned something: Getting lost is an adventure of discovery and also to always tell my mom where I'm going.
