My Photo scholarship 2010 entry
Sri Lanka | Wednesday, October 13, 2010 | 5 photos
My photos are from my recent trip to Colombo, Sri Lanka. My first time in the country, I was eager to learn and understand the people and their culture.
Sri Lankans are very good spirited people, and they are thankful for what they have, however little it may be. But for the younger generation, there is hope for a brighter future as many yearn to see the world beyond their shores. The photographs I have submitted reflect that hope which keeps them going each day.
About me:
When I was nine years old, I asked my parents for a camera as a birthday present. At that time, my interest in photography was simply because I was intrigued by the possibility of freezing memories of events that can never be recreated.
My mother surprised me with a birthday cake in a shape of a camera for my tenth birthday. I wasn't thrilled.
At 24 years old, I bought my very own a dslr camera - my first splurge after earning enough money from my first job. As a journalist today, I know how important photographs are in terms of documenting, and helping to tell a story.
I really want this scholarship, not because its a free holiday, but because I really want to learn the art of photojournalism. I believe with my writing skills and love for travelling I can contribute to the betterment of the world if equipped with the right photography techniques.
I really had a hard time choosing and deciding which photos I should submit. I hope my series of photographs tell you a story, and that my story will be as meaningful to you as they are to me.
There is always hope, and it is that glimmer of hope, that gives us a reason to keep moving forward.
I am very willing to learn, and if I am chosen, I will give my all to learn and absorb as much as I can, to be the photojournalist I have always dreamt of becoming.
