The Moors' Door to Africa

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Thursday, August 5, 2010 | 5 photos

Open a colourful, beautiful door in Morocco and behind it awaits the most unique experience of Northern Africa. Morocco still holds French, Arabic and African influences that all blend together to create this aromatic, exotic, colourful culture amongst some of the most spectacular topography to catch your eye. Morocco leaves you thirst for more colour, more spice, more desert, more Atlantic and more tagine!
The country is so diverse that each day amongst this immense colour can feel like a kaleidoscope of environments. From the Atlantic ocean of Essaouira to the desert of the Sahara, right through to the small maize like streets of the souqs that weave their way through the Medinas... Morocco certainly is a country that provides the photographer a wonderland of opportunity to capture colour and scenery.
Colour brings me to life, it creates a vivid, lively spirit and for me Morocco truly brought that spirit to life. You can easily sit back in a square and sip fresh mint tea and watch cloaked men walk by with their unique pointy shoes, the women in religious and secular Islamic dress and of course the donkeys which you find traipsing through the narrow streets of the medina with no Shrek to follow! Morocco is also where some spectacular Hollywood scenes have been filmed in Ait Benhaddou. Let your senses to the walking and follow the spice trail of colour behind that wonderful artisan door to see North Africa at its best.
