My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited
Australia | Tuesday, January 8, 2013 | 5 photos
I take photographs because I like to show people a side to a culture or society that they may not have considered before. I particularly like taking pictures of people, for their faces are the windows into their world. I lived in China for a year for the purpose of studying Mandarin Chinese, which I speak fluently, and visiting parts of the country that were off the beaten track. I travelled through the troubled Xinjiang province in the far West, experienced the melting pot of ethnicities in Southwestern Sichuan Province, and the crossroads of China and many parts of Asia in the less touristy far northern part of Yunnan Province. My photos come from travels. They paint an image of China that may be different from what most people imagine when asked to picture a Chinese person. We see the complex array of minority groups present in this vast country, and argue that there is far more to China's identity than what meets the eye. I would really be able to engage with this scholarship program, for travelling to foreign countries inspire me the most. I am also aware that I have a long way to go in photography and would cherish the chance to improve my skills and learn new techniques.
