Work in Vancouver

Haha what work?  Despite their being construction on every corner and a shortage of skilled workers we seemed unable to hook Jarod up with any.  It was like being in an Escher maze where you can see the object you want to get to and off you go towards it only to find when you turn the last corner that you are just as far away from it as you started.  I still dont really know where we were going wrong, but I swear if we heard the phrase 'sorry slowing down for winter' one more time we were going to drag the person who said it outside and confront them with the 10 major projects that would be within view just from their office and ask them what planet they was talking about.

We even signed up with a recruitment company hoping to get some temp work, but they just like number on their books, its only after you spend several hours jumping through hoops that they tell you they dont really deal much with the type of work you are after, particularly in Jarods case.  I thought I would be able to get some sort of office work, but my interview at the agency went something like this,

Interviewer 'So what type of work are you after'

Alice 'I guess office type work, I am good with Microsoft Office and can type fast enough (at this point they have the results of some tests which show I am an advanced user of office etc), so data entry or basic secretarial, filing, typing, etc.  Basic office work.

Interviewer 'Yes but what jobs in particular, secretarial, reception, etc'

Alice 'As I said, basic office work, I havnt done those particular jobs before but I think I could manage anything that involved computers or answering phones etc.  I thought part of what you guys did was look at what skills I have and matched them up with available work'

Interviewer 'Yes but we have to know what type of jobs you want first'

Alice 'So basically you sit on your arses and make people spend hours doing tests to create an electronic profile so you can let the computers do the work for you and match people with jobs.  I guess thats all a budget degree in human resources is good for really.

Well I may not have actually said that last bit but I was thinking it.  I certainly wasnt holding my breath for any work and I was right.  They have offered Jarod a day or so moving boxes in a warehouse for $11 per hour.
