Perspectives from Kenya

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

In my opinion, there is nothing more satisfying than telling a good story. As a journalism student and aspiring foreign correspondent, I strive to do just that with every article I write. However, as they say a picture’s worth a thousand words, and I try hard to include pictures that add meaning, depth, and/ or beauty to my stories. The pictures that I’ve chosen to include here are all from a recent trip I took to Kenya, and they are all about perspective, both literally and metaphorically.

In some of the pictures, it is the subject that is looking or experiencing what is going on in their environment, and in others it’s the environment itself that gives perspective to the photo. And Africa is all about perspective- how Africans, both human and animal, view their world, and how the rest of the world views them. It is not just as it seems. There is action beyond the immediate frame and subject, whether or not it is visible or tangible to the viewer at first glance.

I think that I should be chosen for this amazing opportunity to go to Bhutan because I love taking beautiful pictures that tell a story or give extra details about a place or an experience. I would also very much like to learn how to take better photographs, since most foreign correspondence these days is being done by video journalists who not only write and report, but also photograph and film their subjects for news stories.

Taking pictures is a hobby of mine that has morphed into a part of who I am as a journalist, and I can think of no greater opportunity than this one for me to hone my photographic storytelling abilities.
