Homeland

Both visual arts and music have attracted me at a young age, this being a key feature of the environment I grew up in. Taking up photography around the age of 17, soon for the very first time I knew what I want to do with my life. To be honest, then I knew nothing about photographing reality. It all crystallized four years ago while studying in Sweden.

My goal is linking my educational background to photography. Biology taught me that we are part of the biosphere, same as all creatures. Illustrating the relations within this primordial “man-nature” sphere, I wish to show how human basics reverberate socially, at a more earthly and present level. All in all, my goal is visual anthropology.

Trying to develop my linguistic and visual skills, I spent my last 2-3 years mostly on the road. Finishing my MSc in biology in 2012, I took a leap in the dark and recently moved to Norway for new working and cultural perspectives. A big concern is making images cohesive within a story. Editing, my biggest problem, I can't do to save my life. At this turning point in my life, this scholarship can't be nothing but motivation, inspiration and superlative experience.

Sincerely,
Alex Tomazatos
