My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Morocco | Sunday, October 17, 2010 | 5 photos

These photos were taken on a solo trip to Morocco, in which I was rarely alone, thanks in part to the hospitality of the citizens of this beautiful place.
Most of the country is sun bleached, reminding me of a faded tourist poster. But there were patches of the most intense colours in certain clothes and buildings and the environment. Whether it was the acid green of golf courses in the dusty desert, fed with a water supply that probably could be put to better use, or the always crisp blue robes of the berber guides despite hours spent in the sand.
Locals tour their country and enjoy the sights as much as foreigners do. It was so wonderful to watch these people look over their own country. This is why several of the photos are taken with peoples backs to the camera. I often sat and drank mint tea and read books and local papers, watching locals and I'm sure they were watching me.

I am currently studying a Masters in Journalism. I breathe text and image, reading anything and everything and looking at as much as I can. I am infatuated with the process of capturing moments in both words and images.

I think I should be chosen for this scholarship because I have an insatiable curiosity (and imagination) about how people, places and landscapes have appeared together in a way that represents something more. I am convinced that the best storytellers and journalists are constantly searching for an experience or an understanding of a place, and the best photographs and articles evolve from these searches. The best photographs don't just appear in front of the photographer, though it may sometimes seem that way.
I am ceaselessly looking and listening, and that is why I should be chosen.
