In a wealthier part of Kathmandu, a young woman walks underneath a parasol to keep her skin the light shade that is as much a status symbol as her umbrella. Bollywood movies from India have increased the popularity of whitening creams in the Kathmandu market.

Temples are so abundant in Kathmandu—even the hidden ones—that they have become part of the mundane. A community poster board to the left advertises an English language course. Every temple has two deities that represents the masculine and feminine energy that Nepali believe is omnipresent.
