The Examined Life

About alexisalive

A VERY SMART FRIEND TOLD ME . . .

That your first love should never be your career. The theory is that any job - - no matter how great - - comes with a fairly large amount of bullshit. So why would you taint the things you love by associating them with work?

That makes a lot of sense, but in the San Francisco Bay Area, your job is your life.

You spend 2 or more hours getting ready and commuting, an hour at lunch with your co-workers, 8 hours (or more) working . . . to be honest, if your passion isn't your career, you're either not very passionate about it, or you're doomed to a life where passion is - - at best - - a weekend respite that merely keeps you going through the long week.

If there was one thing I was put on this earth to do, it's to be a travel writer. I have a burning need to explore—and understand—the world around me. And, whether it’s a week in Mexico or 3 months in Europe, it's always been important to bring others on my journey. Over the years I’ve written hundreds of pages about the people, imagery, music, food, misconceptions and mistakes of travel, and I'm proud to say my stories have inspired many in my network to buy their first major plane ticket—to take that leap of faith, and go.

I still work the 9-5, but my goal is to slowly move toward a life where my passion is my life. Where travel is the norm, and I can spend my time telling stories and inspiring people to get out there and live their own adventure. I know it's possible, I just have to make it happen!
