My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

What is a building, a place, a city in itself if not a creation of Man, an environment modeled and defined by its inhabitants. A whole culture, the entire history is what Man created.
These five photos are mere glimpses of a culture and a city. These are its inhabitants, they represent a culture, their lives are the stories that build the city and define a way of life. Just like the trees make a forest, us humans make a culture. Observing each unique character is learning, living and seeing things through their eyes. These photos don’t tell a story – the characters pictured in them do. Their eyes and their faces tell the stories. They are all different and unique, still sharing the same space, living together.
Places are all about experiences. Analyzing and observing people as unique individuals, this is how you learn and how one can be enriched. People move people. They influence. They trigger imagination, they trigger the urge for knowledge, the need to know more. People are discovery catalysts.
When each of these people looked into the lens or when they just appeared in the corner of the street, they told me a story. Their story. They let me into their lives, showing me their city. Their culture.
I’m interested in people more than a place in itself. I’m curious and eager to learn and to discover unique characters and their experiences. Letting me into their lives, that’s what I want to accomplish. Letting me see things as they perceive them, as they see them.
Photography is to move others by being moved by your subjects. We are one big world of stories to discover. I want to know more. I want to learn to be a confidant, a story collector.
