Mbuntu

UGANDA | Tuesday, 20 May 2014 | Views [637]

My project has to do with the idea of Mbuntu. This basically means that the community and the individual cannot be separated. I learned all about it from Benen. He is the head of the Mbuntu department at Salama Shield. He explained how they focused on the whole community, and everyone they helped they looked at how that person would be able to help the community. As an introduction to the idea he had me type up in an excel spreadsheet what school supplies different children received in each family. These included books, pencils, pens, coloured pencils, ect. The organization had helped so many people it was amazing to see even in my first day. I found it odd though that many children from the same family attended as many as four different schools. Benen also told me how the community was chipping in to build a house for a family who only had a small shack, and was also raising money for the girl with the burnt leg in church so that she could have surgery. They selected her over many other cases because her/ our church community already wanted to help her.
