My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Australia | Saturday, October 22, 2011 | 5 photos

My name is Amanda Galappathie, 20 years old, and I am from Melbourne, Australia. I was born in the city called Kandy, in Sri Lanka and lived in Colombo till the age of four. My family and I then moved to Melbourne to be closer to relatives here and to start a new life. I am currently studying, my third year, in Architecture and Design at Deakin University. My love for photography came about after my love for wildlife and nature began at a young age watching David Attenborough documentaries, and only grew more as I got older. My parents, for their next camera, decided to purchase a Nikon SRL D3000, which in the end I took over as my own. Ever since then my love for photography has gotten stronger. I even occasionally ask my friends to be my models for photo shoots in the farming lands near where I live. I took it one summer to teach myself how to use the manual settings on the SLR and was able to test out the newly found settings on my 2 month long trip to Sri Lanka back at the start of this year. The raw culture and history was amazing to see as I travelled all over the country and documented everywhere I went. It would be my uttermost dream to be able to combine my two passions in life, Architecture and Photography as a profession and to travel around the world documenting everything. This experience National Geographic is offering in Africa would be absolutely amazing and a possibility of a life time to be able to learn and see things never known to me before, so please consider choosing me for this unbelievable time as I am willing to put in blood, sweat and tears for this opportunity. The photo's I have chosen, take you through a journey into the culture of Sri Lanka and hopefully you will appreciate the beauty as much as I did.
