Capturing Culture

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Italy | Monday, November 7, 2011 | 5 photos

I am applying for this scholarship because it has been my lifelong dream to go to South Africa. I am sure that many people would enjoy the chance to explore the country, but this opportunity would mean the world to me because of my dual passions: a love for travel and a love for photography. My love for photography blossomed my freshman year of college when I purchased my first dSLR camera; we have been inseparable ever since. I take photographs of anything and everything because I believe that the simplest things in life are sometimes the most extraordinary.
I grew up with a love for travel, but last year I had the incredible opportunity to spend six months studying in Milan, Italy. During my semester abroad, I developed a habit of bringing my camera everywhere I went to try to capture the essence of this unbelievable country. These five photographs depict the true beauty that I found in Italian culture. It was my goal to portray the five fields that Italians pride themselves for the most: architecture, people, nightlife, breathtaking views, and, of course, food.
