Understanding a Culture through Food - How I feel about australia

AUSTRALIA | Tuesday, 16 April 2013 | Views [184] | Scholarship Entry

I am a Hong Konger and come to australia to study in order to have a better English. I live on Campus and the most essential part of my life is what and where to eat. Also, what food is cheap to buy and how can I cook.

Hanging around the campus, different kinds of food can be eaten. Japanese sushi, italian mini pizza seems to be fabulous to me. Various kinds of food can be seen anywhere, not just the campus, you can buy Japanese food in the supermarket such as seaweeds and Japanese tofu. Also, I can even buy other asian food such as rice in the supermarket. That familiar sense comes to me everything when I get into it. “It is so ‘international’!”

As an international student, it is fun to go into the supermarket in Australia. Not just because of seeing diverse types of food, you can also see the local cultural characteristics. The milk product is really cheap. One of the reasons is that Australia is famous on its agriculture as it is a major exporter and producer among the world agricultural industry. They have the ability to produce large amount of diary product. Due to the supply and demand, the price is correspondingly low. Another reason is that diary product has formed part of their life. They cannot live without milk. To let the poorer to buy the milk, that’s why the price of the milk is so low in australia.

Many family members are curious about how I cook my food here. Every time after I cook, I will send them a photo and let them guest what I am cooking.
They never guest it right because I use the Hong Kong style to cook(’ West met the east style to cook’). Asian friends, now I will tell you what I cook here.

I have cooked the curry here. Since the dairy product is so cheap here, I can neglect about the problem of the price. First, you need to add some curry power in it and naturalize the spicy taste a bit by adding some milk. This step can be replaced by soymilk and find this method works. After that, you should add the kangaroo that is famous in Australia and other vegetable such as potato and carrot, etc in. Then, the ingredients are stewed with low heat about one hour. Some people may think that why I should cook that long. Well, if you want good food, you should be patient because this process is to enhance its favor of the kangaroo and other vegetables. After an hour hard work, a tasty fusion dish is done. The taste is showing how the local ingredient matched with the india cooking style. Hope you guys enjoy cooking and eating.
