I recently photographed a local protest, tied to a greater grassroots movement, of the Aboriginal people of Canada against their mistreatment by the federal government. While there I started to talk to a tribe leader. After listening to him speak I asked to take his picture. He said ‘You are a storyteller than.’ I would like to prove that man true in my lifetime. I’ve held a camera in my hands for almost five years but I’ve never been able to make that happen. Most of the time I’ve been so crippling afraid of rejection. I was inept in my talents and knowledge to build a story around what I was experiencing. I’ve been trying recently to understand what can break this shell of self-doubt. Travel has been an important part. However, I focused on my relationships with others and my work is mostly a series of individual portraits made to impress them but not my own curiosity. I want to use this scholarship to start my learning process on how to define, understand, and capture subject matter in a more meaningful way. I am a great student; it is the way I learn best. I think this could be the perfect opportunity down a path to become the storyteller I want to be.
