Water
Floating around Utah
My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

I am a senior at the University of Utah studying Mass Communication. I have a passion for the visual arts, specifically video production and photography. This past summer I started a photography collection and recently entered the collection in the Magna Art Show where I won first place. I live, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful states in the United States. I have so many diverse and breathtaking vistas within hours of my home. From the greatest snow on earth to the beautiful red rock in the south, Utah is a photographers dream. One thing I love to photograph is water. So I set out to find all the different water ways around me. First stop, The Great Salt Lake. Photographs of the marina and sunset over the lake remind me of when I lived in Hawaii. One thing about Utah, there is water everywhere which brings our state bird, the seagull. I had fun testing shutter speeds over a pond capturing the seagull. The Salt Lake Valley also has several natural conservations including Red Butte Gardens where I caught this peaceful moment on a deck. Lastly I stayed close to home. I live on a canal, one of several dozen in the Salt Lake Valley. I captured this reflection of a bridge and trees that remind me of a Monet painting. I know that now a days anyone can be a photographer, but I think I have what it takes to notice and capture those things that others miss. I have taken pictures my whole life, but the last few years have studied photography in depth through courses and books. I want more than anything than to travel around the world and capture moments in other cultures and beautiful landscapes that are found all over the world and bring it back for others to enjoy. I hope you consider me for this scholarship and hope I have a future in photography.
