Whilst we were still thousands of feet above the ground, my brown eyes were attracted to the glittering silky man-made series of fortifications laid across mountainous stratum covered with green natural features. I glued my eyes to the windows of the airplane appreciating the beauty of the glamorous aerial view of tall buildings I was seeing down, With the little knowledge I had of China, I realized that it was the Great Wall and that we were already in Beijing because I was told that for one to know that he reached Beijing, he must see the Great Wall or eat the Beijing duck; missing of these two in your visit to Beijing, disqualify you to have ever visited Beijing City.
Upon landing on the soils of Beijing airport while cruising along the runway of the enormous Terminal 3 which is the second largest terminal in the world, I saw many aircrafts taking off and landing along our 4 Kilometer land cruising journey on this world’s second busiest airport in terms of passenger throughput. By the time the plane’s engine completely stopped, I was already absorbed by the romantic scenery of Beijing.
“Ni hao” (how are you) was a greeting from an immigration officer at international check–in; a young Chinese lady maybe in her middle twenties with a round face and a rosy smile that provoked my wider africanistic smile in return to hers. She helped me so quick and left me in suspense, I would have loved if she would have taken an hour helping me so that I should have a good time to appreciate her adorable Chinese beauty.
From the airport it was now a journey to one of the very best universities in Asia thus Beijing University romanticized as Perking University by English natives. It was another wonderfully made young lady from among students’ leaders at Perking who volunteered to tour guide visitors to this cultural university. She led us through the thick part of this well dressed colossal city that engulfs over a million human beings from all walks of life.
I was amazed to see too many people in streets yet some even managed to cycle through such crowd of people, the noises of moving objects, factories combined with the warm air puzzled African grown up boy. However, one most unforgettable scenario in this city was a warm and friendly welcome that I saw from the natives whenever you ask for help of any kind be it direction or something they do it with passion, helping foreigners whole heartedly with no expectation of something in exchange to the help rendered.
