I was born in Kenya,Africa and Im proud to be a Kenyan and an African Kid. I value our cultures

On 2011 I had a chance to participate in an International Youth Exchange Program. It was between my beloved country Kenya and Canada a very diverse country. I got a chance to interact with various youth from my country and from the exchange country. I had an amazing experience cause we were all from different parts of this globe. The Canadians were from different accents i.e Asia , Europe, South America and Africa. My counterpart was a Congolese Canadian, we lived together with Him in our Host Families both in the Canadian phase and Kenyan phase of the program .
We talked about our past experiences in life with . We also discussed with the rest of the group that consisted of 10 Kenyans and 10 Canadians both genders and 2 were supervisors respectively from the Kenya and Canada. My counter part name was Gerard Amani Mutabazi. He shared with us about His past experience of life of a refugee.
His story was quite a shocking experience than ours .He was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo in a family of 8 , 3 brothers and 4 sisters, in the year of 1990 . Being the 4th born he encountered so many difficulties. During that time there was were clashes in the Eastern Congo. They had to ran away from their country due to the chaos of clashes between the then Government and the rebellion troops.There was chaos every where and the consequences were far much more. They ruined every where and displaced families.
The family of Gerard had to relocate to Tanzania so they crossed the Lake Tanganyika and moved into Tanzania. They settled there for a short while with some of their relatives. They then moved southward toward South Africa and left some of their relatives there in Tanzania.To get to South Africa was along way cause they had to pass through several countries along their journey for a save haven . The countries including Malawi ,Zambia,Zimbabwe and Botswana . Finally they settled in South Africa after several years of moving up and down . From Tanzania to South Africa they took a period of about 7 yrs . They settled there 12 yrs ago .
While in South Africa one of Gerard brother and some of His relatives had a chance to go to Canada ,then afterwards they invited the rest of the family to Canada. Gerard together with His parents and siblings had a chance to Immigrate to Canada and right now they are now a one big family. Two of his elder brothers are now married and one is married to Philippines and they have a kid. Finally they now have a good life.
