My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

As I fill out this application, I am sitting in the same bedroom I had as newborn. For 22 years this house has been a part of me, this city so familiar I could navigate it blindfolded. But the comfort of knowing what to expect when I turn down every street has left me eager to explore the dauntingly unfamiliar world outside of Dallas. I have been lucky enough to travel at least once a year since my birth, and each time I leave home I am only left wanting to see more. Some people fear instability, but my greatest fear is that my understanding of the world will be developed solely through the experiences and stories of others. For me, traveling, and the discovery it allows, is a form of nourishment; it is my sustenance. As a recently-graduated film student, I understand the power of an image. I hope to use photography to convey to the image-viewer the whole of that moment – its utter loneliness or serenity, the harshness of the heat or the joy of the evening. I want the pictures I take to fossilize that moment and my experience of it, and I can only achieve this by continuing to document my adventures, whether they be down the street or across the vast landscapes of Greenland.
