My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

My name is Kael Heysen, and my submitted photos are from my time spent in Tintagel, County Cornwall, in the United Kingdom in 2010. I went to the UK with the goal to learn more about travel photography, and spent several months travelling alone around the country exploring my photographic skills in different environments.
However, my first experience of travelling alone was in 2005, when I went to South Africa. It was that experience that helped me decide to become a photographer. After I got back, I went on to university to study what had become my passion. The next three years saw me learn a lot from different lecturers and fellow students; however it wasn’t until my final year that I began to feel for travel and documentary photography.
Last year I travelled to the United Kingdom to further develop my skills in travel photography, and it was here that a lot of what I learnt at university was tested and made, or in some cases broken. I experimented with things that I hadn’t looked at whilst at university, and I enjoyed pushing my mind further with photography. Some examples are long exposures and the use of filters.
Since coming back to Australia, it has been difficult for me to get work in the field I want, which is primarily travel photography. I want to keep learning and pushing myself in that field. I believe the opportunity to learn from an exceptional mentor is really the chance of a life time, and to do it in the same country that set me on this path is even more so.
