It was beyond my expectation to travel around Manila, the Philippines. The position as archipelago country makes it hard to reach by land. Using aeroplane costs quite much money, but I was so fortunate because I had an opportunity to reach Borneo first. Flying from Kota Kinabalu to Clark, the Philippines needed almost two hours using the aeroplane. It was not hard to find the shuttle to reach Manila from the airport. I needed two hours again by bus to reach the main city in Manila. During my trip I felt like home because the situation in Manila was almost the same with my fellow city, Jakarta, Indonesia.
English is spoken by almost all of people in Manila, started from the teenagers and adults, they speak English. It means that communication is not an obstacle for people as long as the tourists speak English too. I needed 30 minutes to decide staying in a hostel because I wanted to get the best price with comfortable ambiance.
Visiting malls was the first thing that I did at the first night to spend. The colorful lamps made the nights were wonderful. Mall of Asia as the biggest mall in Asia made Manila more crowded especially on Saturday and Sunday. Spending much time by window shopping and watching movie made me starving. I decided to look for traditional food stall instead junk food or international food. Walking along streets in Malate was a perfect journey. Some stores were closed. There was something interested that made me want to take alook. Some people were enjoying “egg” with the special seasoning which is covered by thin flour.
I decided to buy that ordinary-looked ‘egg’. The price was not really expensive, so I bought three eggs. I chose vinegar seasoning with paper and carrot in liquid instead nut and sugar. I took those eggs to the hostel where I stayed. The smell from the ingredients made me want to eat as soon as possible. I mixed those combination until finally I was so shocked with the food that I ate. It was a chicken embrio that half egg and half chicken that was covered by flour. I could taste the feet, head, and even hair. The smell was not really good after it was opened. I stopped eating it and kept looking to what I saw and ate. Hesitantly I tasted again for the second time and the third, forth and fifth etc… yes I thought that I could adjust with that meal until I was able to finish those “eggs”.
Filipino call that strange, weird, challenging and delicate food as balut. The Philippines gave me another sensation to enjoy the eggs with totally different taste and smell. It was unforgettable moment for me. Well, balut is a must for visitors who come to The Philippines to try. When you don’t try that “incredible” meal, I regard that you don’t visit the Philippines. Good luck and enjoy that amazing traditional culinary.

Hahaha! Balut is an acquired taste. But I'm glad that you tried it. :)
