My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

I have travelled to many places in the world, but never have I experienced anywhere with a landscape as beautiful and a people as hospitable as in Sierra Leone. These 5 photos are a selection from the time I spent working there, chronicling the stunning places I visited and the wonderful people I met. It represents a significant period of learning and self reflection in my life and a time of great hope for the future.
The 1st photo is of Martin Kamara. We worked together to facilitate Participatory Rural Appraisal workshops in a number of communities with the aim of enabling the community to come up with their own action plan to overcome the problems that they faced.
The 2nd photo is of a participant in a PRA workshop in the village of Rokholifa, during the drawing up of the community action plan. Traditionally young people are not represented in community decision making processes, but the use of PRA ensures that they are given a voice.
People in Sierra Leone love to dance and it is a skill which is developed from a young age. The 3rd photo was taken in Rokholifa at a community celebration over the presentation of the action plan they had come up with at a previous PRA workshop. A young girl is shown demonstrating her dancing skills to her classmates.
Lack of farming assistance was identified as one of the key problems faced by the Rokholifa community. The 4th photo depicts how farmers traditionally dry rice, using a method which is vulnerable to pests and results in a high rate of post-harvest loss.
The 5th photo shows young boys from Rokholifa removing a tree stump from the demonstration swamp that we developed with the community following the workshop. To me this photo really exemplifies how people there worked together to overcome the problems that they faced.
