My Photo Scholarship 2010 entry: Members of My Patio and Terrace Gardens

I immensely enjoy browsing through books and magazines loaded with colorful glossy pictures of wilderness, especially mountains, and love reading riveting adventure stories like Valley of Horses (Jean Auel). Both media have left deep impact on my psyche and stirred inquisitiveness that have not only translated into a desire to go on a true adventure but also influenced my career decisions. I studied geography, trek and trail management, and tourism. I have trekked in the Indian Himalayas on several occasions, but I long for more of wilderness.
Currently I am working as a freelance writer. I have written about different subjects including travel and geography. I aspire to be a full-time adventure travel writer. No travel writing is complete without descriptive and quality photographs; therefore I want to learn how to capture abysmal depth and magnificence of lofty mountains on a two-dimensional medium. As Jason has rightly mentioned in his blog, “There are more images being taken in the world today, but there are fewer photographers”. Even brief professional training in photography will give me an edge in highly competitive world of travel writing.
The World Nomads Travel Photography Scholarship would be a valuable apprenticeship and a good addition to my CV. It will give me an opportunity to present my perspective on relatively unexplored world of Bhutan known for pioneering the concept of Gross National Happiness. My writing experience and passion for adventure, and professional guidance will add more value & character to each picture.
“Members of My Patio and Terrace Gardens”, a 5-picture portfolio, is an attempt to draw parallels between plants and our lives. They may not have vocal cords like us but their colors and arrangements speak volumes about their behavior and environs. I have selected five plants from my two small gardens to highlight similarities between the two.
